Open admissions at HACC

Harrisburg Community College has an open admissions policy.this policy opens the school up to and provides higher education for many students. The students could have a good or bad learning experience due to this policy.I think that the open admissions policy is a great opprotunity for the people.
There are many reasons that this policy is great and helps people continue their education. The first reason it is good is because it allows more people to continue their education. If there are more educated people out in the workforce,it helps the employers in the area to keep skilled ,educated workers on their payrolls.secondly, the policy helps to keep the students meet a more diverse group of people while they are attending. There are students here from all walks of life with different backgrounds and income levels attendin HACC.This really helps the students learn from interacting with other cultures and hightens the learning experience. The last reason that I will tell you about is that it brings students who would not be able to get into a limited enrolment university into the world of higher education. The open enrolment policy makes it easier to for older people who have been out of school for a long time go back to finish their education because the enrolment process is easy and cheap. These are just a few of the many reasons that the open enrollment policy is a good one.
On the other hand, this policy has some bad points that some people could see as a problem.Depending on the students placement testing scores, the student might have to take remedial or prerequisite classes. This could be a problem because it could discourage the student and they will not try as hard and this would give them a greater chance of failure.Secondly,if they accept everybody who applies it fills up the classes and some students will have to be turned away from the required classes that they need.Another reason thast they could say the policy is bad is because it makes it easier for people who might not be ready to commit themselves to two years of hard work and studying or are not motivated enough to go to school. There are many good and bad points of the open admissions policy at HACC but I think that the good points make it worth keeping.

Commuting

More people should commute on bicycles. If more people would ride their bikes to work or to school, the world would be a better place. The people would be in better shape because riding for one hour burns between three hundred to five hundred calories depending how fast you are going.Commuting by bike would also ease the carbon emissions in the air.If you drive an SUV for one hour,it puts 1.7LBS of carbon into the air, multiply that by millions of cars on the road and you can figure out that it is harming our atmosphere.I am not saying get rid of your cars, they are necessary sometimes like to go to the grocery store or when it rains.Modern bikes are easy to ride because they have more gears. There is a gear for climbing hills easier and a gear to go fast on flat land. They even are putting disc brakes on them now for better stopping power. They have halogen lights and red LED blinkies for riding at night time available now. These new technologies make it easier to ride your bike on the road safely back and forth to work.

Americans work ethic is slowly declining.I recently read in the newspaper that Harley Davidson workers are complaining because they get points now for calling in sick.As you know, the factory was looking at moving it's location out of state. The worker's absenteeism was one of the reasons they wanted to leave and workers calling in sick last year cost the company thirteen million dollars in lost production.Under the new policy, the workers would be able to call in sick four times a year and they are complaining. All of the jobs that i had,i could not call in or i would be disciplined and these workers want to be able to call in sick numerous times a month. It is my opinion that four sick days a year is enough. On the other hand, the management should be lenient on the workers who get a bad sickness such as the swine flu and need a couple of days off to get better. These cases should be the only exeption and they would have to be accompanied with a doctors excuse.Taking days off unexcused days off when they are not sick is not acceptable. This is just one of many reasons the work ethic is declining.

Immigrants

Most illegal immigrants should be sent back to their own country. The people who come to America with no desire to become citizens and the ones commiting crimes should be tried and sent back to their own countries. Some of these illegals are here commiting crimes against citizens and when they are caught, they sit in prison until they get a trial which has to be paid for by tax money. There are other immigrants who are not commiting crimes but living in public housing and collecting food stamps which also take away from the taxpayer.Healthcare is also provided to some and that bill is footed by taxpayers too. These people collect these benefits but somehow manage to work under the table and do not have to pay taxes.I have worked for years, paid my taxes the whole time and when i hear about this going on,it makes me angry.I know somebody who reads this will say that my thoughts are not right or not humanitarian but it is just how i feel.I know that some illegals did come here to be sucessful and to start a new life.We should help those who are desiring to become citizens by helping them get help to speak our language fluently so they can communicate with us.I think that we should also help them to get a social security number so that they can help to pay taxes when they are employed. What i am saying is that there are good immigrants and bad immigrants and the U.S. should differenciate between them.

health care

Health care should not be run by the federal government. The house and senate are wasting taxpayers money and time trying to change the system we have now and they are getting nowhere. It would be more efficient for the states to run their own health care systems. If the states run the healthcare system,it will be more localized and it will save money because the states already have the state offices of health already running.Nationalizing health care would require more offices and staff to run it which would require more money and it would be funded by higher taxes.Pennsylvania has a medical card system for people who are underemployed or in poverty to make sure they are covered and the people making a good living can afford to purchase their own insurance. There is also a program called CHIP to make sure that children are covered. There are a few people in the state that are not covered though because not everyone qualifies for a medical card. The state of Pennsylvania has a pretty good system as it is and it would be bad if the federal government stepped in and changed it.However,if the national government would insure everyone, the cost of healthcare might go down because the hospitals and doctors will not have to waste money suing people and trying to collect money from people who are not insured. Also,if everyone is insured, they could go to the doctors more often for checkups to prevent getting sick and to catch diseases early in their development so they could take care of it early. If the states would insure people however, the government would not have to and the doctors would not have to collect that money and they could concentrate on early checkups to keep the state citizens healthy and productive. It should be the responsibility of individual states to provide health care for their citizens, not the federal government.
